Light and Sign

About half an hour after midnight, the ship Light and Sign, Whitby, coal laden, struck the Herd Sand as she was putting in. The Northumberland lifeboat rowed alongside, but the crew declined to leave their ship, as she was not in a dangerous position. She afterwards was towed off and taken into the harbour with slight damage. The wind is now from SSW. The weather is dull but fine.
